Compassionate care recognized by DAISY and BEE awards
GREENVILLE – Spectrum Health United Hospital inpatient unit nurse Nikki Sias, RN, received a DAISY Award for Excellence in Nursing after being nominated by a recent patient.
Therese Alt, director of nursing at United and Kelsey hospitals, read Sias’s nomination at the awards ceremony on May 27.
“I was very fortunate to be a patient of Nikki,” the appointment began. “She responded to all of my needs with compassion and has always been cheerful and positive. She always had a positive word. During my three day stay, she came to say hello to me even though she was not my nurse that day. Nikki carries the title of Nurse Nurse with pride, and it really shows in her efforts. Spectrum Health is very fortunate to have her on your team. “
Kelly Becker, nurse technician in the emergency department at United Hospital, joined Sias to receive accolades. Becker received the BEE award after being nominated by a colleague – emergency room nurse Lauren Willard.
In his appointment, Willard described how Becker brought to his attention that a recent patient had stroke-like symptoms, which led to a correct diagnosis and timely care.
“Based on Kelly’s early recognition and assessment skills, care was not delayed for the patient,” the application read.
The DAISY Prize Program was adopted from the DAISY Prize, an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family were deeply grateful for the clinical skills, care and compassion of the nurses who looked after Patrick, so they created an award to thank nurses around the world.
United and Kelsey Hospitals expanded the recognition program to include the BEE award, open to all clinical and non-clinical staff, in addition to nurses.
Applications are open for any Spectrum Health employee who regularly goes beyond creating a meaningful patient experience. The awards are given on the basis of nominations from patients, community members and colleagues.
Nomination forms can be found at any Spectrum Health facility or submitted online at www.onlineregistrationcenter.com/UHKHDaisyAwards.
